RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS

April 30, 2011 / admin / Uncategorized

Concern was expressed by Fleetwood Churches Together that a white paper is being processed which includes a reference to Religious Education (RE) in the National Curriculum. However, RE will not count towards the new English baccalaureate: a package of subjects giving a pupil a recognized educational qualification. Therefore, because of RE being excluded from the ‘package’, there will be a disincentive for pupils to study RE. (They will not have time and staff no incentive to teach.) However, RE is a popular subject for study and examination with pupils testifying to them being better citizens. It was agreed that a letter be sent from Fleetwood Churches expressing our concerns to the government that RE be encouraged and accrue the benefits for the pupils and society. Concern was also expressed that RE may only be comparative religion and that there may be little emphasis on Christianity. Some churches have already acquired a form to sign to support this issue.
